Welcome to todays diary entry! There’s something uniquely cruel about being woken up at 6am the morning after a full-on show weekend. Your body is aching, your brain is still playing catch-up, and all you want is one proper lie-in to feel vaguely human again. But no such luck for us today.
My brother had borrowed the campervan while we were away, which was fine – more than fine, actually – it’s always nice when we can help each other out like that. But the only time he could swing by to drop it back and pick up his car was 6am. Sharp. Like, proper middle-of-the-night early. He’s not normally that unreasonable, but he had work and needed to get moving, so we didn’t really have a choice.

Normally I’d have been mildly furious to be dragged out of bed at that hour. But today? Rory was already awake. Fully awake. Sitting up, grinning, chatting to himself – and absolutely refusing to go back to sleep. It’s like he sensed something was happening and wanted in on the action.
It’s been interesting lately with Rory’s sleep. For the longest time, he was a total milk monster. Honestly, the kid would’ve bathed in it if we let him. Bottles and bottles throughout the day and night – it was his comfort, his ritual, and probably his love language. But ever since we got rid of one of his old bottles – the one that had seen better years and had probably been through more than most war veterans – he just… stopped. He didn’t want milk anymore. No fuss, no big tantrum, just a quiet “no thanks.” And surprisingly, that change has really helped with his sleep.

Apart from this morning’s very enthusiastic sunrise party, I can’t remember the last time he climbed into our bed. And you know what? I actually missed it. Just a little. There’s something about those sleepy snuggles that makes the early wake-up call slightly more bearable. Slightly.
We’ve also started putting him in warmer PJs. He’s never been one for duvets – more of a kick-everything-off kind of sleeper – and we started to realise he might be waking up just from being a bit chilly. So now it’s all about the cosy onesies and fleecy layers, and it seems to be helping. Toddlers really are a Rubik’s cube of trial and error.
Despite the early start, today passed in a bit of a fog. My head was still somewhere between the show field and the motorhome, and I was trying to keep my eyes open through sheer force of will. But I kept reminding myself – just get through today. Because tomorrow? Tomorrow is my day.
I’ve officially claimed it. No negotiations. No last-minute favours or unexpected errands. Just a full, glorious day to rest, reset, and maybe even sneak a nap if the universe allows. I’ve earned it. We’ve all earned it.
And the best bit? After tomorrow, I’ve only got three more working days before we go on holiday. That’s it. Three days standing between me and sun, sand (hopefully), and at least a few evenings without a to-do list. I’m clinging to that thought like a life raft.
So yes – today started early and ended in yawns. But we’re getting closer. Closer to rest, to family time, and to the version of life where the biggest decision is whether to nap before or after lunch.
