Welcome to todays diary entry! New week, new challenges—and today we welcomed a new starter to the team. She’s just left a job she’d been in for nine years, so this is only her second role, which is a pretty big shift. I remember how strange it feels stepping into something new after such a long time, so I’m keen to make sure she’s made to feel as welcome and supported as possible.
I’ve got a good feeling about her already and I’m excited to see how she settles in over the next few weeks. You can already sense the team dynamic shifting slightly with her arrival, which I think is a really positive thing.
With her arrival, our sales team now stands at four—me included—and I think that’s exactly what we need for the summer ahead. Having a solid team in place means we can give each customer the time and attention they need without anyone feeling stretched too thin.
We’ll hold that structure through the peak, and then as things start to slow down again towards the end of October when we head off, the team can naturally ease back down. It’s a nice place to be in terms of staffing. Not too big, not too small—just enough hands on deck to give everyone the chance to breathe and not feel like they’re firefighting every single day.

These next couple of weeks are going to be really full-on, though, with the Blakemere show just around the corner. It’s close enough now that we’ve started obsessively checking the weather forecast—every glimpse giving us either a reason to smile or something else to worry about. It’s that time of year where we check five different forecasts and hope at least one is wrong in a good way. Fingers crossed for clear skies and no wind. Sun is optional. Rain and wind, very much not.

Jen came down again today to go over some of the field measurements. We’re starting to get to the point where we can plot out who’s going where, and it’s slowly starting to come to life. You can almost see it all forming now—the layout, the stands, the footpaths. It’s exciting, but there’s a fair bit of pressure that comes with it too. Getting the layout right is key. One misplaced stand or awkward pinch point and it can throw the whole flow of the show off. Thankfully, Jen’s attention to detail is second to none, and between the two of us we’re making good progress.
Shop-wise, this weekend’s sales were a bit strange. Saturday was fairly quiet—slower than expected really—but Sunday bounced back and brought a good bit of trade through the door. You can never quite predict it, but it’s always nice when the weekend finishes stronger than it starts. It gives you that little morale boost heading into the new week.
Now the next challenge is working out how we staff both the shop and the shows without running ourselves ragged. It’s going to take a bit of juggling and a few late nights to get it all ironed out, but we’ll get there. Just another phase in the beautiful chaos that is the start of the season! Somehow, we always make it work—even if it feels like we’re winging it at times. That’s the joy of small business life, I suppose: lots of spinning plates, but plenty of pride when you see it all come together.
