Welcome to todays diary entry! Rory is still not 100%, but there’s definite improvement. His cough is easing up, and he seems a bit brighter today, which is a relief. Hopefully, by the end of the week, he’ll be back to his usual self. It’s been tough seeing him so under the weather, and it’s felt like a long few days of sleepless nights and worry. But at least we’re heading in the right direction now, and fingers crossed, the worst is behind us.
Sales-wise, today was a bit more of a challenge. It wasn’t a bad day by any means, but it definitely wasn’t as busy or as productive as yesterday. That’s pretty much to be expected, though—Wednesday is notoriously quieter at these shows. You always go in knowing that if you have a strong Tuesday, you can afford a bit of a slower day mid-week without feeling too much pressure. Even though the footfall wasn’t as high, there were still a good number of people stopping by for a chat, and it’s all about keeping the momentum going. Some of the best sales come from conversations that start on a quieter day, so you have to stay switched on, even when things aren’t moving as fast.

I wasn’t the only one feeling it today—the other awning guys were finding it a bit tougher going as well. The footfall was noticeably lower, and while there were still good conversations happening, there weren’t as many people looking to buy on the spot. That’s just how it goes sometimes. You’ve got to keep the energy up, stay positive, and make sure you’re in the right headspace for when things pick back up again towards the end of the week. This show is a marathon, not a sprint, and having a good Tuesday means there’s less stress when Wednesday dips a bit.

A nice change today was having Lisa and Rory at the NEC. Lisa’s been stuck in the hotel looking after Rory while he’s been unwell, so it was good for them to get out for a bit. Rory absolutely loved it—spent most of his time running around in the big sandpit by the helter skelter. It’s amazing how something so simple can provide so much entertainment. He was completely in his element, charging about, digging, and just generally being a two-year-old with endless energy. He made sure to test the limits of every inch of that sandpit, making tunnels, stomping around, and getting absolutely covered in sand. I think he would have happily stayed there all day if we let him.
The only problem with letting him burn off all that energy? Trying to get him back in his pushchair when it was time to leave. He was having none of it. Full meltdown mode engaged. It’s one of those moments where you know it’s coming, but you’re just hoping for a miracle that today might be the day he goes in willingly. Nope. Not today. Trying to wrestle a flailing toddler into a pushchair while people walk past pretending not to see you struggling is an experience all parents know too well. Arms flailing, legs kicking, the whole dramatic display—it’s like trying to stuff an octopus into a small bag. Eventually, we managed it, but I don’t think he’ll ever forgive me for interrupting his sand-based adventures.
Still, despite that, it was nice to have them both here and to feel like things are getting a bit more normal again. Rory getting some fresh air and running around like usual made a big difference to his mood, and Lisa seemed glad to get out of the hotel room for a bit too. Hopefully, Rory keeps improving, and the rest of the week stays on track. Tomorrow’s another day, and while it might not be the busiest, there’s still plenty to be optimistic about. As long as we keep the energy up and keep the conversations flowing, the rest of the show should shape up well!
