Diary Entry – 15th December 2023

One of the real bug bears we have had over the last few weeks is the situation with the wee mans bed. He has been sleeping on the area where the single bed is in our 3 berth motorhome and we have barriers at the bottom and at the side to keep him in. When we first got the motorhome it was perfect because he was no where near as mobile as what he is now. In fact he is probably to fast for his own good and can be trying to swan dive off the bed in a little more than 3 seconds if left unattended.

Even when he is in his sleeping bag now which fastens at the top he can still stand up. Partnered the fact that he seems to have gone through a bit of a growth spurt so the barriers we had are no longer barriers but more like hurdles. Or something that if he wanted to and tried hard enough he could quite easily launch himself off. That brings the challenge that you never really seem to sleep soundly because the moment he moves in his bed you are instantly awake and alert to the fact he may be preparing for an escape.

Unfortunately 99% of the time it is nothing but still in your imagination you envisage the worst and that then prompts me or Mum, mainly Mum, in fact almost always Mum to get out of bed and to to check on him. So today we got the tape measure out and we have come up with a plan. It is something that we have spoken about before but for some reason it is not something we have ever thought about a lot but with how things are now it is becoming increasingly important we sort something out. So, the plan, is to get a mattress made that sits down the side of the Bed that can be his own little bed space. So even if he tries to launch himself over his barrier it is only the floor the other side rather than a 2 foot drop. That also means we can put him down to bed at 8pm and if he wants to sit up and play for a bit he can do and we are not having to sit one inch away in case he goes all Tom Daley on us.
