Diary Entry – 11th March 2024

Did you know you can follow us on our journey on YouTube!!

Welcome to todays diary entry! Just your casual Monday in the desert, you know, as you do. Well actually today was far from standard for me as id finally built up the stamina and the courage to finally climb the big sand dune in front of us and the 2nd largest one on Erg Chebbi which is Morocco biggest sand dune. Id said from the moment we got here i was going to climb it and i was determined to do and the weather seemed a little bit cooler today so i thought now is as good as time as any and as we start thinking about our next few steps on the big march home i thought time may not be on my side.

With it being out so far into the desert it is hard to try and judge how long it should take and how far away it was but i knew a few people that had done it in the days before and they managed to do it. Well 2 of the family of 5 managed as the 3 that didn’t do it just did the sand boarding instead. It has to be one of the most demanding physical challenges i have taken on in many many many years. The absolute hardest part was that it is 3 steps forward 2 steps back because the sand is so fine and parts of it were so so so steep.

There were times on the way up that i had to sit down and spend a couple of minutes getting my breath back and the last 40 metres were very steep and i had to do them in sets of 20 steps and then sit down, catch my breath and do another 20. The final 20 metres were literally on my hands and knees it was so so so so so so hard to do and the relief when i got to the top was huge considering there had been several times when id thought about just binning it off and going back down but i kept on going and plodding on.

When i got back all my lips were dry because of the warm wind and because of how dry it was. As the walk started right outside my motorhome id walked the whole way bare footed and my feet were killing me. I walked into the motorhome flung myself into my captains chair and put my feet up and drank 4 or 5 glasses of water. I was drained, id felt sick at the summit and i was relieved to have got back. Like when we climbed Snowdon id taken a can of beer with me to the top and i felt that sick that i did not even drink it i just had a sip of water. In typical Morocco style i was just sat at the top of the 2nd biggest sand dune and then out of no where i had a local guy trying to sell me fossils. So after a minute or 2 of not getting peace and quiet i made my way back down.
