Welcome to todays diary entry! Scottish Pints, Calzones & Precious Moments. fter work yesterday, we bundled ourselves into the motorhome and hit the road north toward Kirkintilloch. It’s a journey we’ve done before, but there’s something about heading to Scotland—Lisa’s roots—that always feels like coming home in a different way. Rory nodded off in the back, the sun dipped behind us, and we cruised along the motorway with the motorhome running beautifully—its first proper test since the fuel filter change, and I’m relieved to say she purred all the way. There’s something almost meditative about those kinds of drives. No distractions. No deadlines. Just the open road and the comfort of forward motion.
We landed around 10pm, and although we didn’t stay up too late, just pulling onto that familiar street gave us all a sense of exhale. It’s always good to reconnect with Lisa’s family. There’s a warmth there that feels effortless. It’s like pressing pause on all the madness back home and stepping into a simpler rhythm, even if just for a couple of days.

This afternoon we strolled down to the local pub with her mum and dad, soaking up the sun and letting Rory run wild while we chatted over a few drinks. And the prices! £10.65 for four drinks—it felt like we’d stepped back in time. I even double-checked the receipt like some suspicious tourist. It’s small joys like that, isn’t it? A round that doesn’t break the bank, a proper chat with people you love, and just a few hours where nothing feels urgent.
Dinner was from one of my favourite spots—the Kirky Mahal. I went full beast mode with a mixed meat calzone the size of my forearm. It’s the kind of food that makes you unbutton your trousers and rethink your life choices, but by God, it was glorious. Every bite was a warm hug of spiced meat, molten cheese and crispy dough.

Lisa’s mum kept making comments about Rory’s hair—how it’s getting long, how it needs “a proper cut,” how he’s starting to look like a little hippy. I, of course, love his mop. It’s unruly and free, just like he is. But I can already feel the tide turning against me. Lisa’s giving me knowing looks, her mum is gently lobbying, and Rory is none the wiser. I’ve tentatively agreed to let them take him for a trim, but I might be the one crying when the first curl hits the floor.
There’s something about these moments though—about watching your child grow up in the presence of grandparents, about passing chips around the table, about swapping stories over pints and tea—that reminds you why you work so hard. These days don’t cost much, but they’re priceless. And given the pace we’ve been running at lately, this little pause in Scotland feels like exactly what we needed.
Back to the mayhem soon. But not today.
