Welcome to todays diary entry! The day before my birthday, and it honestly keeps slipping my mind. I suppose that’s a sure sign I’m getting older—when your own birthday starts to sneak up on you without fanfare. It’s just another day on the calendar now, and with working all weekend, it doesn’t quite have the same feeling it used to. There’s no build-up, no excitement like when you were a kid. It’s more like, “Oh yeah, it’s my birthday tomorrow,” in between serving customers and checking stock.

Rory’s still not quite himself. The runny nose seems to have cleared up, but now he’s got that lingering dry cough, the same one he had while we were at the NEC. And it’s that kind of cough that always hits hardest at night—disrupting sleep, making him restless, and in turn, making sure we’re not getting any proper rest either. I feel like I’ve aged five years just this week from broken sleep alone. It’s one of those tirednesses that creeps in slowly and makes everything feel a bit heavier.

That said, today’s been busy. It was one of those Saturdays where the hours just vanish. From the moment the doors opened, we had a solid stream of customers, and there’s definitely a buzz back in the shop now that March has arrived. You can tell people are getting excited about spring—questions about awnings, campsite bookings, and gear for summer are all ramping up. It’s a great atmosphere when it’s like that. There’s something really motivating about people coming in to plan their getaways—it reminds you why you do all the long hours and deal with the rush.

It’s strange reflecting on where we were this time last year. We were at the stunning Haven La Chance campsite in Merzouga, smack bang in the middle of the Sahara Desert. Every morning was golden sunrises over the dunes and the evenings were filled with stillness and stars. It felt like time slowed down out there. That was my birthday last year—barefoot on warm sand, a cup of Moroccan mint tea in hand, and not a care in the world. The year before that? Dubai. Rooftop views, sunshine, and endless buffets. It’s become a bit of a tradition now—birthday somewhere warm, somewhere magical.

But not this year. This year, I’ll be in a caravan, working a full weekend in the UK. It’s hardly exotic, and certainly not sunny, but it’s where we’re at right now. Still, I can’t help but look ahead already. We’ve said it—we’re doing six months away next winter, and I’ve got it in my head that my 38th birthday will be back in Merzouga. I want to wake up to the sand and the sunrise, take Rory out to play in the dunes, and spend the day just enjoying that slower pace of life.

I’ll be 37 tomorrow. It doesn’t quite sound right, does it? I still feel like I’ve only just left my twenties in some ways, but then you catch yourself complaining about your back or choosing an early night over a pint and realise, yep—this is it now. But I’ve got a lot to be grateful for. A business I believe in, a family that means the world, and a life that, while hectic, is never boring. There’s something quite special in all that, even without the heat of the desert.

So yeah, tomorrow might be just another day at work. But it’ll also be a reminder of how far we’ve come. A quiet celebration of life as it is—and a promise to myself that the next one will be sandy, sunny, and surrounded by everything I love.
