Welcome to todays diary entry! Well, today was grim. There’s no other word for it. The weather had well and truly turned – grey skies, sideways rain, and yellow warnings flashing on our phones for thunder and torrential downpours across the region. Classic British holiday finale, really. One last hurrah from the clouds to make sure we didn’t get too comfortable.

With that in mind – and given that there wasn’t much point hanging around in a soggy field hoping for a miracle – we decided to do the drive home today. Just get it done. Rip the plaster off. Even though we weren’t due back until tomorrow, there was no way we were going to be wandering around Devon in ponchos pretending to enjoy ourselves. So we packed up, said our soggy goodbyes, and hit the road.

Of course, I had to make things ten times worse for myself by doing something as innocent as unplugging the water hose from our serviced pitch. That’s all I did. Just leaned forward, twisted slightly, and BANG – my back went again, even worse than before. One of those nasty, sudden shooting pains that takes your breath away and makes you question every life choice that led to this moment. Honestly, it knocked me for six. I just froze there by the tap thinking, “This is how it ends, isn’t it?”

And naturally, nothing says “great idea” like then climbing into a motorhome driver’s seat and preparing to drive for five hours in heavy rain. I mean, just what you want with a bad back – no lumbar support, a toddler in the rearview mirror, and the occasional aquaplane reminder that yes, the weather is trying to drown you.

To be fair, the drive itself wasn’t too bad – traffic was kind, the rain eased up now and then, and Rory dozed off for part of it, which helped. But every time I had to lift my foot to change gear, I winced. It was like someone had wired my spine up to a cattle prod. And of course, you forget how often you shift gears when you’re concentrating – until your back starts screaming every single time you do it.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – there is nothing worse than a bad back. It affects everything. Breathing, walking, sitting, standing, blinking. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

We eventually made it back, and while we weren’t unpacking a show van this time, we still honoured tradition with a pizza tea. Even without a marquee or awning to take down, there’s something deeply comforting about ending a long drive – especially one in miserable weather – with pizza in your lap and the soft hum of the heater in the background.

And Rory? Absolutely buzzing. Honestly, I think pizza is his greatest love in life. You could give the lad a Michelin-starred three-course tasting menu and he’d still choose a Margherita with garlic dip. Watching him eat pizza is like watching someone reconnect with their soul. No distractions. No hesitation. Just joy.

After tea, it was an early night for all of us. Tired, sore, weather-beaten, but also quietly content. These kinds of days aren’t the pretty ones. They’re not the ones you put on postcards. But they’re part of the rhythm. The necessary closing scene to a brilliant, chaotic, unforgettable week.

And tomorrow, we reset. Blakemere is next – a new pitch, a new place, and a bit of a change of scenery for a few weeks. Hopefully by then, I’ll be walking upright again…
