Diary Entry – 06th December 2023

We had the pleasure of doing some proper touristy, cultural stuff. Today we visited the wonderful and eye opening Souk El Had. This is basically the largest urban market in Africa. It is in the heart of Agadir. Souk El Had, a place I’ve grown quite fond of. It’s massive, with over 6,000 stalls, yet somehow it feels intimate. Each of the 13 sections is its own little world. As I wander through, I’m just one among the thousands who visit daily, but the hustle feels comfortably familiar. It’s intriguing how they rebuild the market every few years, keeping its essence alive. In the midst of all the activity, I find a sense of quiet discovery, a connection to the everyday life of Morocco.

We wanted to be out of the door for 9am to try and get on an early bus, this was intended to be the first time we had gotten on the bus. However we didn’t leave until 10:30 and whilst we were waiting for the bus one came along but must have been full as he waved and drove straight past so back into taxis it was. I thought to myself, well we can always get the bus back, but once again i was under estimating the size of the Souk and by the time we were ready to come back my feet hurt so we got another taxi back.

It was some place, it never ceases to amaze me the scale of these things. It is an eye opening. This market is open everyday apart from Mondays and it is open from 8am until 10pm. There must ben millions of people every month that come through those gates. They sold everything from mattress, to air fryers, to real genuine Stone Island jackets, to fruit and veg. The most surprising thing though was the fact that all of the fruit and veg looked absolutely immaculate. Almost shiny like you would expect to see at the Hollies in Northwich. The only downside was where they were making honey and the like there were literally hundreds of bees flying around. For those that know me, will know i don’t like bugs or anything that flies.
