Welcome to todays diary entry! Today was the definition of a lazy start – and honestly, I needed it. I woke up aching, absolutely battered from yesterday’s impromptu awning mission. The kind of ache that settles deep into your shoulders and hips and makes you walk around like you’re 97 years old for the first hour of the day.
And I say impromptu because this awning wasn’t supposed to be going up until today. That was the plan. That was my plan, anyway. But the Fegans had other ideas.

They caught me off guard at the carvery yesterday – all full bellied and mellow – and managed to talk me into helping put it up that afternoon. And I get it. When you’ve bought something new, especially something as exciting (and massive) as your first awning, it’s only natural you want to have a play with it straight away. I totally understood the excitement. Didn’t feel like doing it at the time, but you know how it is – I couldn’t say no.
And in true “new awning” style, it wasn’t just the awning. It was the annex. The accessories. The bags. The puzzle of poles and pegs. What started as a quick setup turned into a full-blown outdoor project. But we got there. Eventually. And now it’s up, it does look cracking. I think even Kel’s quietly impressed – though obviously still pretending he didn’t want one in the first place. Classic.

Today, I gave myself some breathing room and spent most of the day down by the lake fishing with Kelly. It was peaceful – the kind of slow, steady day that lets your brain take a break. But bloody hell, it was a frustrating one.
I had such a tough time getting into it. Lost about six fish, and I just couldn’t find my rhythm. My head wasn’t quite right for it – you know when you’re doing something you normally love, but it just won’t click? That was me for most of the day. I sat there for a good five hours with not so much as a twitch on the line, convinced I’d lost my mojo.
Then, as if out of nowhere, I landed four in the space of an hour. Typical. It always happens when you’re starting to consider packing up or muttering under your breath that the lake is cursed. But hey – that’s fishing. Not catching, as they say. And to be honest, I think I needed the calm more than the catches today.
We kept things pretty chilled in the evening. Everyone was wiped – probably a mix of sun, walking, and general show season burnout – so we had a relatively early night. But not before trying out the new fish and chip shop on site.
And I’ll say this: it was actually really good. Light, crispy batter. Chips that weren’t soggy. Even the mushy peas passed the test. Wildly overpriced, of course – but that’s just part and parcel of being in a touristy spot like this. You sort of accept it, don’t you? As long as what you’re paying for is worth it, you don’t mind. And in this case – it definitely was.
So, yeah. Not a wild day. But a good one. The kind of holiday day where your body slows down, your shoulders drop an inch, and you remember why you came away in the first place. Sun. Good people. A few fish. And chippy tea by the lake.
