Welcome to todays diary entry! Back to work today. And you know what? For a first day back after a holiday, it was actually really good.
I went in fully expecting the usual post-break fog – you know, where you forget your login password, stare at your inbox for 20 minutes, and wonder how people manage to do this five days a week. But surprisingly, none of that happened. I walked in, got straight on with it, and found myself working with a bit of purpose – like I was actually glad to be back in the swing of it. Shocking, I know.
I did my usual walk around, checked in with the team, and then we had a morning team brief, which turned out to be really productive. Everyone seemed switched on, full of ideas, and ready to crack on. You could feel the momentum in the air – and honestly, it felt good. There’s something really satisfying about seeing your team operating well, especially when you’ve been away and they’ve held the fort.

And of course, it’s always nice to see your work mates after a bit of time off. The people who know your bad habits, your go-to vending machine snack, and exactly how you like your tea. There’s comfort in that familiarity – and in knowing you weren’t missed too much (but maybe just enough to stroke the ego).
As a small thank you for all their hard work while I was off, I told the team lunch was on me today – and of course, we went for the classic: McDonald’s. Nothing quite says “we appreciate you” like a sack of Big Macs and a handful of salty chips.

I genuinely can’t remember the last time I had a Maccies. Probably before I started trying to get back on track with eating better. This time I kept it simple – just a meal, no three sides, no rogue extra cheeseburger “just in case.” And I have to say, I was proud of that. Slowly but surely, the scales are moving in the right direction – I’m down 15lb now, back into the mid-16s, which feels like a real milestone. Progress, not perfection. And still room for the occasional chicken nugget.
Lisa was in work this afternoon while Rory was at nursery, so I got the honour of doing nursery pick-up for once. I was actually quite looking forward to it – figured I’d get one of those heartwarming “DADDY!” moments at the door, arms outstretched, big smile…
Nope.
The little traitor opened the door, clocked it was me, and looked absolutely devastated. Face dropped. Genuine disappointment. You’d have thought I’d turned up dressed as the tax man.
I mean, I get it – I’m not Mum, and Mum’s the one who gives the best hugs and probably smuggles biscuits into the car. But still… The. Git.
To be fair, he came around within a few minutes. But still, my ego is in tatters and I fully expect a Father’s Day card to make up for it.
So all in all – not a bad re-entry into the real world. No drama, a productive morning, some quality time with the team, a guilt-light McDonald’s, and a healthy helping of toddler rejection to keep me humble.
