Welcome to todays diary entry! Another lazy start today – and I have to say, I’m getting very used to them. We still wake up relatively early, but there’s something so different about an early start when there’s no pressure attached. No work. No rushing. No loading vans or chasing emails. Just the kettle boiling, the slow steam of a proper cuppa, and a few precious minutes of peace before Rory wakes up and unleashes his trademark brand of full-volume toddler chaos. Honestly, those quiet sips of tea are golden. Feels like you’ve cheated the system and snuck in a little grown-up time before the whirlwind begins.

We decided to head out for a bit this afternoon and ended up wandering down to Dawlish harbour, where we found a little pub tucked just off the front. It was one of those places that probably looks a bit ordinary from the outside but has a great view once you’re in – the kind of spot that makes you want to order “just one drink” and then accidentally stay for three hours.
We had a few drinks and grabbed some food, and while it was all really nice… it was eye-wateringly expensive. The kind of prices that make you laugh awkwardly and say things like “Oh well, we’re on holiday,” while silently weeping into your pint.

Just under £7 for a beer. Seven quid! I kept thinking about the £10 rounds I was buying in Wetherspoons back in Kirkintilloch a few weeks ago. You know it’s bad when you’re doing mental currency conversions within your own country. And the burger – while tasty – came in just shy of £20. I mean, it was decent, juicy, plenty of toppings, but I don’t think any burger on earth should have a price tag that starts with a 2.
Still, food aside, it was a really lovely afternoon. We spent a few hours on the seafront, letting Rory run about, watching the waves, just taking it all in. Dawlish always has that laid-back, seaside town charm – a little scruffy in places, full of character, and just the right amount of salty air to clear your head.
Back at the campsite, we let Rory loose in the soft play, which was a smart move because he needed to burn off approximately seven days’ worth of energy. He dove straight into it like it was his own personal mission, climbing, sliding, jumping – basically turning it into a one-boy tornado zone while we stood by with that parental mix of awe and mild panic.
Then, we rounded off the evening in classic British holiday style: bingo night.
It was a full-on community hall vibe – plastic chairs, paper cards, and an old-school mic that cuts out every third word – and it was brilliant. There’s just something about campsite bingo that brings everyone together. And then – as if the day hadn’t been lucky enough – Amanda only went and won! She didn’t keep it all to herself though – she split the winnings with us, which just says everything about her, really. Generous to the core. Never one to let a little win go unnoticed without sharing the love.
So, yeah – another slow, simple, and very satisfying holiday day. A little overpriced burger, a very appreciated pint, a seaside stroll, and a surprise bingo win. That’s a pretty solid Tuesday, if you ask me.
