Welcome to todays diary entry! We woke up around 9am today – a bit of a lazy start for us, but it felt well-earned after the Derby detour and the general build-up to holiday mode. The plan was to hit the road by about 9:45am, with one very important mission in mind: make it to Cofton in time for the carvery. Priorities, right?

The Sunday carvery at Cofton finishes at 4pm sharp, and we weren’t about to miss it. But before we could even dream of gravy and roast potatoes, we had to make a quick stop at Sainsbury’s to stock up on the essentials – food, snacks, toddler bits, and, let’s be honest, a few “treat yourself, it’s the holidays” items that definitely weren’t on the list.

Once we got going, it was a surprisingly smooth journey. Apart from one extremely annoying blip – the petrol station stop on the M5. Honestly, what a scam. We needed fuel, the petrol light was on, and there was no way we were risking pushing a 4-tonne motorhome down the hard shoulder. So we pulled in.

And that’s when we saw the price.

Fifty pence more per litre than the average petrol station. FIFTY. That should be a crime. I get that service stations are a convenience, but that’s not convenience – that’s daylight robbery with a Costa attached. You’ve got no choice though, have you? When the light comes on, you just have to bite the bullet, pay the money, and cry a little inside as the numbers on the pump go up like you’re playing fuel roulette.

Fuelled up (physically, not emotionally), we carried on south and honestly? It was a lovely run. No traffic. Smooth roads. And the weather – while a bit windy – was actually really pleasant. Cofton always feels like the proper start of summer for us. There’s something about that stretch of Devon countryside, the winding approach roads, the scent of grass, sea air, and barbecues all blending together. It just signals relaxation.

We travelled down in convoy with the Fegans, which added a little extra spice to the journey – especially considering they’re now towing a big, shiny new trailer. It’s a bit of a beast, built for transporting Kel’s motorbike, but at the moment, the bike has been booted out to make room for a much more essential piece of kit…

an awning.

Yep. Let’s take a moment for that.

Now, Kel – for months – has been adamant that they don’t need an awning. “They’re pointless,” he said. “Too much hassle,” he said. “We don’t need the extra space,” he said.

And yet here we are: one large awning, one annex, and no fewer than eight boxes of accessories now tucked neatly into the trailer like some kind of mobile showroom. It’s genuinely impressive – not just the sheer volume of kit, but the complete 180 Kel has done. He’s gone from “we don’t need an awning” to “we must have all the awning extras known to man” in the space of one purchase.

To be fair, I get it. Once you step into the world of awnings, it’s a slippery slope. You start with a porch awning and before you know it, you’ve got annexes, carpets, storm straps, and colour-coordinated draught skirts. It’s a lifestyle. A personality, even.

Anyway, we rolled into Cofton just in time, parked up, and made it to the carvery – mission accomplished. Plates were piled high, Beef was spoon-fed Yorkshire pudding like royalty, and just like that, the holiday properly began.
