Welcome to todays diary entry! Today in the shop I was well and truly on my own, and of course, it ended up being busy for about a three-hour stretch right in the middle of the day. I don’t know what it is, but sometimes it’s like everyone in Northwich meets up, hops on a coach, and agrees to arrive at exactly the same time. One minute it’s dead quiet for an hour straight, and then suddenly, seven cars roll into the car park all at once. No easing in, just straight into it.
To top it off, there was no one in the warehouse today either, so it was literally just me running the whole show. Sales, customer service, finding stock, lifting boxes—you name it, I was doing it. I even found myself darting between the till and the stockroom like a contestant on a game show.
It’s exhausting, but also weirdly satisfying once you make it through. But as always, you just get on with it. Plough through, keep moving, get stuff done. It won’t last forever, and once you find a bit of rhythm, you sort of get into a flow. I think you have to in this game. Days like this make you realise how much you appreciate a well-staffed shift, but also give you that sense of pride that you can handle it when push comes to shove.

That said, it’s actually been a decent few days in store. We’ve had a good bit of footfall and some solid sales, which is exactly what we need to keep momentum going. You’ve got to fight that natural instinct people have now to just buy online with a few clicks. So I’ve been really trying to make sure that people feel like coming into the shop is worth their time—offering advice, giving proper service, just making it a better experience than staring at a screen.
I’ve had a few nice chats with customers who mentioned how refreshing it is to speak to someone who knows their stuff and isn’t just trying to upsell them something they don’t need. That’s the good stuff. That’s the reason we do it.
I’ve got two days off next week, and I honestly cannot wait. It’s still going to be cold, but the forecast says it’s warming up later in the week. I’m just waiting for that first properly warm spring day—you know, the one that makes you believe summer’s really coming. As soon as that hits, the shorts are coming out. I’ve been eyeing them in the cupboard already, just waiting for their time to shine again. There’s something about that first warm day—it lifts everyone’s mood and just makes everything feel a bit easier.

And of course, in the back of my mind constantly is the Blakemere show. It’s creeping up fast—just three weeks now—and I’m really hoping it turns out to be a good one. It’s not like the festivals or big events like Camper Jam, Busfest or Dubbed Out where you’ve got a built-in crowd. With Blakemere, we’ve got to draw the people in ourselves, and that makes it feel a bit more like a gamble.
If the weather’s dry and the wind holds off, we’re in with a shot. I’m not even fussed about it being sunny—I just don’t want wind blowing everything around and ruining the setup. I’ve been to enough shows to know how much of a nightmare a gusty weekend can be. All it takes is one badly timed gust and your gazebo is halfway across Cheshire.
Still, my blind optimism remains. That’s what keeps you going really. You’ve got to believe it’ll all work out, even if the odds feel a bit stacked. We’ve done the prep, we’ve got the stock, and we’ve got the support. Now we just need the people to turn up. Fingers crossed we get the weather and the turnout to match the effort we’ve all put in. If we do, it’ll be a cracking start to the season.
