Diary Entry – 08th October 2024

Did you know you can follow us on our journey on YouTube!!

Welcome to todays diary entry! We have decided that when we set off we are going to head straight down through Spain. I am just trying to find cool things to see down the heart of Spain so we put out a post on social media to try and gain some ideas because actually when it comes to Europe we are not very well travelled so it is always good to get other peoples ideas. The challenge we have always had is that when we are making our way down south it is always end of October so it can still be quite cold in Spain and southern Spain at these times as well so we always chase the sun so end up skipping through relatively quickly.

Then on the flip side when we are coming back north again we are usually a bit home sick and ready to get back to starting proper work again and get our heads into the spring and summer time. So we never end up having the time to make our way through at a leisurely pace. Our plan this year was to leave the UK on 2nd October and have that time to make our way down and see some stuff on the way but due to unforeseen circumstances our stay got extended so here we are part way through October waiting for the 27th.

So we put a little post out in a few places and some of the suggestions we have had have been incredible and almost all of them have been places that i didnt even know about. One of them is called Potes in Cantabria. Potes is a charming town in northern Spain, located in the region of Cantabria, within the stunning Picos de Europa mountains. It has a rich history, dating back to medieval times, and played an important role as a trading and strategic town due to its location at the crossroads of ancient routes. The town’s cobbled streets, stone bridges, and traditional houses give it a historic, picturesque feel.

One of Potes’ main historical attractions is the Torre del Infantado, a medieval tower that was once a defensive fortress and is now a cultural center and viewpoint. The town is also famous for its proximity to beautiful natural landscapes, including the lush valleys, rivers, and mountains of the surrounding area, making it a great spot for hiking and nature lovers.

Potes is also known for its local cuisine, particularly its hearty stews like “cocido lebaniego,” and for its production of “orujo,” a strong local liquor. Visitors love its quaint, peaceful atmosphere, stunning views, and the opportunity to explore both history and nature in one place.

We have had about 10+ ideas for places and once again i find myself a little disappointed that we may not get the chance to see them all. We will maybe save a summer for a proper tour of Spain and back into Portugal. I am also desperate to get into Turkey and the Balkans but it just time i suppose but i will get there. I would love to go a year long trip. I have been starting to watch Tread The Globe and the trip that they did and i find those guys so inspirational and i would love to do something like that. Or do a big big trip somewhere. Its mainly Russia black balling a big trip although you can get in it is just a bit too risky for me.
