Diary Entry – 20th March 2024

Did you know you can follow us on our journey on YouTube!!

Welcome to todays diary entry! Well we made it, we hit the stretch target of making the port of Tangier Med but it was by no means plain sailing. I will start from the beginning. It was only 387 miles to cover which in any normal vehicle is maybe 5 or so hours but in our motorhome we seldom go over 60 miles an hour so by the time you factor in a stop for the bathroom, a stop for the Beef to stretch his legs etc it can quite easily turn into a 7 or 8 hour drive which is what happened today.

Only In Morocco

The thing is i knew exactly what i was letting myself in for and it was me that had battled to try and get it all done in a day so we could have a lie in at the port and get tickets sorted rather than rush for the entire of the next day. It is only main roads once you get out of Marrakesh and it is 119 miles ones stretch, 17 miles another stretch, 160 miles another and then finally a 40 mile bit so on paper it could be very easy but we got stuck in about an hours worth of traffic in the middle of Casablanca whcih was a real pain.

If you thought Moroccan drivers were bad when there wasn’t traffic you should see what they are like in traffic jams. Absolutely wild. Honestly, neither of us have ever seen any thing like it. We were in 3 lanes of traffic but people were driving in the middle of other people and one point it was 6 across in a 3 lane motorway. Then, just when you think you have seen everything all off a sudden a full lane of traffic comes down the hard shoulder, what makes that even more surreal was that there signs and cones on the hard shoulder but we watched the vehicle at the front of the traffic in the hard shoulder walking down it and throwing all the signs off the road.

After we had got through that bit of traffic we didn’t see much more as it was on the verge of going dark so all the traffic was pulled over to eat as it is Ramadan. SO we pottered along right the way to the port. We arrived in Tangier Med for about 21:30 meaning it had taken us 7.5 hours. The big drives are becoming increasingly taking there toll on me, i used to be able to chew the miles up but i do feel more pressure since we got the motorhome and the realisation that everything we own is in this piece of 7 metre x 2 metre x 3 metre. Along with my wife and child.
