Diary Entry – 14th March 2024

Did you know you can follow us on our journey on YouTube!!

Welcome to todays diary entry! So today we embarked on another relatively large stint of driving as we headed from Ouarzazate over probably the most commonly known mountain pass in Morocco which is the Tizi N Tchika pass which connects the south east of Morocco, the likes of Ouarzazate, Tinghir, Zagora and Merzouga which the more densely populated north west of Morocco places like Marrakech, Rabat and Casablanca. It was actually built in the late 1930s by the French and it follows an old dromedary caravan route.

One of the main reasons we couldn’t wait to get back here

As Mum finished work at 11am by 11:05 we were on the way the route is only 117 miles but it was still down to take over 3 hours because of the nature of the roads and pass itself. Once again the scenery was simply breath taking even before we had gotten to the pass. Which is what i was using as my excuse as we were apprehended by the police! The Gendermarie! This was the first time that we had been pulled by them on this trip. It was also different people who pulled us this time. Last year we got pulled by the guys in the white suits who are probably not the real police and they definitely didn’t give me a ticket or there was not any type of paper trail and i am 99.99% certain that my money went straight into his pocket. This time it was far more official as he actually gave us a real life genuine ticket.

The drive over the pass was brilliant and it was good to be driving it ourselves this time in our motorhome rather than an excursion with a minibus full of miserable people like last time. We headed straight for the Marjane to get some proper shopping as we found it quite difficult to find any veg whilst we were in the desert so it was nice to see some greenery again. Even better than that we had a MacDonalds as well, i ate like an absolute pig but boy did it taste and look good. There is also a pizza hut up by the Marjane so i think next time we go down there i want to have a proper pizza hut pizzza.

It was amazing to get back to La Relais and to be somewhere familiar, the moment you are here you realise why it is (in my opinion) regarded as one of the best sites over here. Helped again by the fact that there is a bar. So it was sun canopy out, chairs out, table out and set up for roughly 2 weeks before we have a 1 night stop at L’Ocean Bleu on our way out of Morocco which will have been just over 5 months in Morocco during this stint. We were amazed at how many English vans there are on here as well. There is absolutely loads it was/ is always nice as well to see some familiar faces as well. We decided what better way to celebrate being here than to go and visit the bar. The prices on beer were cheaper than i remembered and they also do Desperados as well which could be very good or very bad for me as i am absolutely partial to a Desperado.
