Diary Entry – 26th February 2024

Did you know you can follow us on our journey on YouTube!!

Welcome to todays diary entry! I only have 4 working days this week i am having Friday off so i can get stuff done early early doors. We are actually being very productive and made a decent dent in packing the garage and starting emptying the awning etc. I have always been an advocate of a slow pack down but this is a pack down 5 days before we are due to leave. I want to have everything done on Wednesday so Thursday is a day is double checking that everything is done. The only thing that is making me nervous is the fact that we are still due to have work done this week and sometimes the most commonly used word in the Moroccan work mans vocabulary is “Tomorrow”. So we have been waiting for a cover to be made for the air fryer and the table so we can have a waterproof cooking station outside and he said it will definitely be tomorrow. I’m not convinced.

Slide to see the difference! Paint Work Completed on the Campsite!

This is the same guy who has said the carpets will be doe on Thursday which once again is making me a bit nervous as i am not sure if i think they will be done in time. The thing is we are not leaving here officially until Friday early afternoon so i have been telling him that we are leaving on Thursday to allow that bit of extra time ‘stoppage time’ to use a footballing analogy to make sure they are done in time. I was relieved to get my paint work finished and what an amazing job they have done. You wouldn’t believe it was the same bonnet or the same headlights. A truly amazing job!

Today we have had a 11kg gas flow bottle filled up so we are now travelling with 2 almost full bottles which really would probably see us through until July time with how much, or how little we use gas. We got new window wipers fitted as well so certainly getting the Moho desert ready. All we are waiting for now is carpets and the reversing camera sorted and then we are officially done. Apart from the shopping trips we need to do. We are planning on doing the full lot on Friday morning. Uni Prix first because it opens at 08:30, then onto the Souk El Had for clothes shopping and then onto the Marjane. We are doing it in that order because we need to do the Marjane last because we wouldn’t want to leave a load of chilled food or anything sitting in a taxi for several hours before we got back to the motorhome. Hopefully get back to here for 1pm then head off. Our first stop is only 60 minutes way so as long as we don’t leave after 3 or 4 then we will be fine. I don’t drive here in the dark so want to be set up as early as possible ideally.

As we have done in the last few entries we are talking people through our stops and we are now up tot he final point, our end destination which is a place called Merzouga, a name that dances on the tongues of adventurers and dreamers alike, stands as a beacon in the Moroccan desert. Perched on the edge of the majestic Erg Chebbi dunes, this small village is more than just a place on the map; it’s the doorway to an otherworldly landscape that stretches as far as the eye can see, with sands that shift in hues of gold, orange, and red under the ever-changing sky.

Merzouga’s claim to fame is undoubtedly the Erg Chebbi dunes, towering mountains of sand that offer an unparalleled desert experience. Imagine the thrill of climbing to the top of these dunes for sunrise or sunset. The play of light and shadow, the silence of the desert, and the vastness of the landscape combine to create moments of pure magic, where time seems to stand still, and the worries of the world fade away into the sands.

But the magic of Merzouga extends beyond its scenic beauty. It’s a place where you can dive into the heart of Berber culture, experiencing the warmth and hospitality of the desert people. Staying in a traditional Berber camp, you’re treated not just to a place to sleep but to an immersion in a way of life that has adapted to the rhythms of the desert. Nights are spent under star-studded skies, around campfires, with stories and music that have traveled through generations.

For the more adventurous souls, Merzouga offers a playground like no other. From camel treks that take you deep into the dunes, to exhilarating quad biking tours that kick up clouds of sand, there’s no shortage of ways to explore the vastness of the desert. And let’s not forget about sandboarding, where you can slide down the dunes as if they were snow-covered slopes, adding a rush of adrenaline to the serene landscape.

But Merzouga’s enchantment isn’t just about the adrenaline or the awe-inspiring landscapes; it’s also a place of tranquility and introspection. The desert has a way of putting things into perspective, of stripping away the non-essential, and reminding you of the simple beauty of existence. Whether it’s the sight of a lone tree standing defiantly in the desert or the intricate patterns left by the wind on the sand, there’s a poetry to the place that resonates deep within the soul.

In essence, Merzouga is a symphony of nature, culture, and adventure, a place where the desert sings its ancient song, inviting travelers to pause and listen. It’s a reminder of the earth’s raw beauty, a spot where the horizon stretches infinitely and the skies tell stories of the cosmos. For those who heed its call, Merzouga offers a journey not just across the sands, but into the heart of what it means to be truly alive in this vast, beautiful world.
