Diary Entry – 13th January 2024

Did you know you can follow us on our journey on YouTube!!

One of the things that is great about not travelling around a lot/ at all is being comfortable not doing anything especially when the weather has been as hot as it has today. Honestly absolutely sweltering today. As we put the sun canopy away every night now rather than leaving it up we have no protection from the sun in the morning as well as the fact that the grounds people here have come and chopped the trees down behind us as well so we have gone from having probably the coldest pitch on the site, which we chose for that reason to have something from the desert.

Diary entry

We are people who don’t mind not travelling, people who don’t mind not doing anything especially if either of us has had a rough week at work sometimes it is nice to just do nothing. Today was certainly one of them and we probably didn’t venture more than 30 metres away from the motorhome or the sun canopy/ air conditioning. I think the only time we left was to go and put a wash on. So although we are in Morocco our lives are very similar to peoples back home in the UK apart from we are in a motorhome in Morocco.

We had a long old chat about plans for the coming year and we are thinking stay on this site until end of February then have a month to get back and do so more sight seeing then into Spain then have a month driving up the east coast but there are places that i am absolutely adamant that i want to go to. I went to Montserrat i think as a child but i cannot remember being there and i watched a program about Belchite on TV and since then i have been desperate to go.

Montserrat

Montserrat, a spectacularly jagged mountain range located near Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain, is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and unique geological formations. These multi-peaked mountains, with their peculiar rock formations, have been sculpted by wind and rain over centuries, creating a visual spectacle that’s both awe-inspiring and slightly otherworldly.

At the heart of Montserrat is the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey, a Benedictine monastery that blends spirituality with stunning architecture. This historical monastery is home to the revered Black Madonna, a wooden statue dating back to the 12th century, often visited by pilgrims and tourists alike. The site also boasts the L’Escolania, one of Europe’s oldest boys’ choirs, adding an auditory delight to the visual splendour of the location.

Apart from its religious and cultural significance, Montserrat is a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The numerous hiking trails around the mountain offer spectacular views and connect various hermitages scattered across the landscape, providing a serene and meditative experience.

Belchite

Belchite, in contrast, tells a more sombre tale. This small village in the Zaragoza province of Spain is a haunting reminder of the brutalities of the Spanish Civil War. The old town of Belchite was the site of a significant and devastating battle in 1937 and has been left in ruins ever since as a stark memorial.

Walking through the ruins of Belchite is like stepping back in time. The remains of the town – crumbling buildings, bullet-riddled walls, and the remnants of everyday life – offer a poignant and visceral experience of war’s aftermath. It’s an open-air museum, preserving history in its most raw and unfiltered form.

The eerie silence that envelops the ruins is occasionally broken by guided tours, which offer insights into the tragic events that unfolded there and the lives impacted by the war. Belchite serves not only as a historical site but also as a symbol of the horrors of war and a powerful testament to peace.

Both Montserrat and Belchite, in their unique ways, encapsulate the rich, diverse, and sometimes turbulent history of Spain, offering profound experiences that go beyond mere sightseeing.
