Diary Entry – 30th September 2023

That 6am alarm came around real quick. Scarily quick. But i was up straight away i avoided the temptation to have a 10 minute snooze. That is a real pet hate of mine that is when someone has about 43 snoozes every 3 or 4 minutes. I would much rather just get up straight away. You never feel good after snoozing. The major part of the plan to get up north as quickly as possible was trying to keep the Beef asleep. If we could keep him asleep and get a good couple of hours up the road then we are well in. To be fair he is a solid sleeper and he didn’t stir to much.

We have 412 miles to do and have to be at Calais ferry port 60/ 90 minutes before it sets sail so that meant we needed to be there for half past 3. We made good time to be fair and it was the first time we have got the ferry from Calais. We have historically gotten Le Shuttle but the ferry through DFDS was £86 so over £100 cheaper. We are never in a rush enough to warrant spending an extra £100. The whole ferry experience was actually really nice, in Calais they have a new duty free etc which never seems to be any cheaper.

A stress free crossing got us into Dover after about 2 hours so does take longer than Le Shuttle but we wont get the Le Shuttle again at nearly £200. To be fair we have said that we will never drive through France again. We priced up the ferry from Santander to Portsmouth and i think that’s what we will do now and not drive through France. Everything is just so expensive the tolls, the diesel etc. Unless we were planning on a France tour i will only ever get the ferry from Spain. The drive takes it out of me too much and takes me a bit of time to recover.
