Welcome to todays diary entry! The Last Weekend Before the Change. Today felt symbolic — one of those quietly significant days that mark the end of one era and the start of another. It was our last full weekend with the shop open on both Saturday and Sunday this season, and that in itself felt strange. For months now, weekends have been the heartbeat of our business: the busiest, most intense, most rewarding days of the week. They’re the ones that fly by in a blur of customers, questions, sales, coffee runs, and constant activity. But today, beneath the usual rhythm, there was an undeniable sense that we’re shifting gears.

The shop wasn’t quite as busy as it would have been in the height of summer — a few regulars popping in, some last-minute purchases from people squeezing in a final trip before the weather turns, and plenty of conversations about storage covers, maintenance kits, and winter prep. But the real focus now has moved beyond sales. Everything we’re doing is about preparation — getting ourselves ready for the huge job that’s about to start next week when we completely turn the shop around.

We’ve already begun stripping back displays and reorganising stock in the background, but next week is when the heavy lifting begins. And it’s a mammoth job. We’re talking about moving thousands of products, dismantling displays, redesigning sections, and essentially rebuilding the entire shop from the ground up. It’s one of the biggest logistical challenges we face all year because it’s not just about aesthetics — it’s about creating a space that works better for our customers and for us. We’re rethinking flow, highlighting key product areas, making more space for new ranges, and improving how people navigate the shop. Every tiny detail has to be planned.

What makes it even more challenging is the timing. We’re doing all this while still trading, while still fulfilling orders, and while still juggling everything else that comes with the end of the season. It’s a bit like trying to remodel your kitchen while still cooking dinner for a family of six every night — chaotic, messy, and exhausting. But it’s also exciting. There’s a real buzz that comes with this stage of the year because it signals that something new is just around the corner.

No products found.

I caught myself reflecting a lot today too. This final weekend open to the public always does that to me. I think back to where we started back in spring, how crazy the season was at times, how many miles we’ve travelled to shows and trade events, and how many long days and late nights it’s taken to get to this point. It’s been exhausting — there’s no getting around that — but it’s also been deeply rewarding. Every challenge we’ve overcome, every problem we’ve solved, every customer we’ve helped has brought us to this point. And now, with the finish line in sight, the tiredness feels worth it.

The reality is, though, the hard work isn’t over. In fact, in many ways, the next two weeks might be harder than anything we’ve done all season. There’s an immense amount to coordinate: deliveries of new shelving, signage updates, product repositioning, clearance sections to set up, marketing plans to tweak. The next phase requires stamina, focus, and patience — and probably a fair bit of coffee too. But once it’s done, the shop will look and feel completely different, and that’s a prospect that really excites me.

There’s also a deeper emotional layer to this stage of the year. As we start to “close down” the shop in its current form, it’s impossible not to think about everything that’s happened here over the past twelve months — the highs, the lows, the crazy weekends, the moments of chaos and laughter. And now, here we are again, on the brink of change. It’s bittersweet, but mostly it’s motivating. Because this isn’t just about clearing shelves — it’s about setting the stage for what’s next.

As I locked up tonight, I felt that familiar mix of exhaustion and anticipation. We’ve got a mountain of work ahead, and the next couple of weeks are going to push us all to our limits. But there’s also a quiet confidence in knowing that we’ve done this before — and we’ll do it again. And when the shutters lift on the newly transformed shop, it’ll all feel worth it.

This was our last “normal” weekend of the year — and from here on out, it’s all about building what comes next.
