Welcome to todays diary entry! Sniffles, Slowdowns, and Small Steps Forward. Today felt like the unofficial start of autumn in our little world — not because of the weather or the changing leaves, but because Rory has officially come down with his first cold of the season. It’s become a bit of a tradition at this time of year; as soon as the temperatures start to dip and the nursery germs start swirling, he inevitably catches something.

Thankfully, it’s nothing too serious — just a blocked nose, a bit of snuffling, and the occasional grumpy moment when he realises he can’t breathe properly. But if there’s one thing about Rory, it’s that he’s unbelievably resilient. Even with his little cold, he’s been in fantastic spirits all day, still running around causing chaos, laughing his infectious laugh, and generally being his happy, mischievous self.

We were supposed to be going to the Stoke game tomorrow — something I’d been quite excited about all week — but we’ve decided to give it a miss. As much as I love going to the football, dragging a snotty, sniffly toddler out into the cool air for a few hours isn’t the smartest idea, and right now his health and comfort come first. It’s a shame, but there’s always another match, and it gives us a chance to slow the pace a little, which in truth is probably no bad thing given how intense the past few weeks have been.

The silver lining is that staying home means I can finally make a start on one of those jobs I’ve been putting off for far too long — clearing out and reorganising the motorhome garage. It’s amazing how quickly that space becomes a dumping ground throughout the season. Between trade shows, weekends away, day trips, and constant repacking, it slowly fills up with everything from spare cables and water containers to random camping gear we “might need” but never actually use. Every year around this time I do a deep clean before we start loading it up properly for the big trip south, and every year I’m shocked by how much accumulates.

There’s something oddly therapeutic about the process though. I actually quite enjoy sorting through everything — deciding what’s essential, what can stay, what can go, and what just needs organising properly. And it’s more than just tidying; it’s part of a bigger ritual that signals the beginning of the real countdown to departure. Every time I do one of these prep jobs, it makes our adventure feel that little bit closer. And this one feels even more significant, because once the garage is sorted and ready, the next time we’re packing it properly will be for the long, winding road down through Europe and into Morocco.

I always get reflective at this stage of the year. The season’s been long and demanding — relentless at times — but clearing out the motorhome and preparing for what’s ahead gives me perspective. All the shows, the trade events, the endless days in the shop… they’re all leading up to this. To that moment when we pull off the drive for the last time and start the journey south.

So while today was technically “uneventful” — a sniffly toddler, a change of plans, and a bit of sorting and planning — it actually felt quite grounding. It reminded me that sometimes slowing down isn’t a setback; it’s a chance to breathe, reset, and focus on what’s coming next. And even though Rory’s first cold of autumn is an unwelcome visitor, it’s a small reminder that the seasons are shifting, life is moving forward, and the next chapter is getting closer every single day.
