Welcome to todays diary entry! Bank Holiday Shifts and New Energy. Bank Holiday Mondays always have their own feel. In years gone by, we’d have been absolutely overrun — families queuing out the door, frantic parents grabbing last-minute kit before setting off, people piling trolleys with chairs, windbreaks, and cool boxes. It used to feel like one of the biggest trading days of the summer.

But today? It was busy, yes, but nothing like the mayhem of July or early August. A steady hum rather than a roar. It’s yet another reminder that the season is shifting. The majority of people who needed things for their summer trips have already been and gone. What we see now are just the stragglers: the ones who realise on the morning of their holiday that their pump is dead, or that they can’t cope with another weekend without a proper chair. Important business, but nothing like the tidal wave of orders we’ve just come through.

And honestly, that was fine by me. Today’s slower pace matched where my head is at. Having had those couple of days away in the motorhome — even though it was only fifteen minutes down the road — has given me a reset I desperately needed. It was nothing glamorous, but it did the trick. It reminded me that stepping away, even briefly, gives you perspective. I came into the shop this morning calmer, more level-headed, and more positive than I’ve felt in weeks.

It’s amazing how quickly your head can flip. This time last week I was on the verge of a semi-breakdown over the motorhome. Stressing about batteries, leaks, worst-case scenarios, the lot. I felt wound up so tightly that every little hiccup felt like the end of the world. Now, after a couple of low-key days, I feel completely different. The worries are still there in the background — they always will be with an older van — but they don’t feel like they’re strangling me anymore. The balance has tipped back towards optimism.

And I need that optimism, because September is looming. Including today, I’ve only got five more working days before we dive headfirst into twenty-two days of absolute chaos. September is going to be full throttle from start to finish: Chepstow, Glasgow, Busfest, trade visits, and the big push in the shop. It’s going to be relentless. But here’s the thing: for the first time in a while, I feel ready. Rested enough to face it head-on, instead of staggering into it already beaten.

So today wasn’t the wildest Bank Holiday Monday we’ve ever had, but it was exactly what I needed it to be. Steady, manageable, a day where the tills ticked over, customers left happy, and I didn’t feel like I was drowning in it. If anything, it was a reminder that the peak madness is over and the shift towards the season’s end has begun. And instead of dreading the next wave, I’m sat here tonight actually looking forward to proving we can get through it.
